The Milan based converter has installed a second package of Martin Automatic equipment on its latest press. The box of spare parts supplied with the first Martin machines lies unopened and gathering dust in a corner of the production area.
With the addition of a new Martin MBSF butt splicer on a new 13" Nilpeter SG3300 press, El Paso, Texas-based General Labels increased their production throughput by nearly 40%.
On power savings alone, GEWA calculated that the Martin equipment reduced costs by €10,000 ($13,300) per year.
On a typical job using 100,000 feet of stock, Baker estimates his Martins save him at least $300 in materials and $100 in ink waste.
The Martin MBS at Etikon increased running speeds by 10% and cut waste materials by 5%, which on 24/hour working, has meant a payback period of less than 12 months.
"We chose the Gallus/Martin combination early on as the best way to achieve repeatable quality... It (Martin) has also reduced our run times by around 30%, and by not stopping for roll changes, has improved the quality of our finished product, and that is almost priceless," said Lehmann.
